The Peruvian Embassy’s Agricultural Department is a facilitator that has to deal with regulatory, technical and scientific subjects relevant for our regulatory and technical national authorities and universities competent on food safety, plant and animal health, fishery, poultry, livestock, and environment, as well as those matters of usefulness for our Peruvian farmers, food producers, exporters, manufacturers, warehouses and packing facilities located in the coast, highland and jungle regions. To accomplish this aim, this Department coordinates very closely with several technical and scientific institutions of the United States, such the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as well as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and its agencies such as the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), the National Organic Program (NOP), the Pesticide Data Program (PDP), the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The scope of this technical coordination may also involve other institutions such as universities, seaports, airports, treatment facilities, laboratories, scientific centers, US associations, wholesale markets, warehouses, importers, and training centers, among others. The Agricultural Department focuses its attention on the regulations published very actively by US agencies in the Federal Register website. The regulatory documents that deal directly with Peru or with fresh and processed food to be imported into the US are analyzed and transmitted to the Peruvian competent authorities and private institutions that might need these regulations in order for them to proceed accordingly. This Department, as part of its activities, conducts a series of meetings and teleconferences with representatives of the US agencies mentioned above, and perform visits to laboratories, scientific centers, associations, foundations, and universities to discuss technical and scientific subjects of top priority for the Peruvian Government and other topics that could potentially be developed with their Peruvian counterparts.
